Chapter 5: Soap Making Oils

Just like choosing ingredients in any recipe, choosing oils in soap recipes can be quite daunting. There are so many oils you can choose from, and each type of oil has unique characteristics that can significantly affect the quality of your soap. Nevertheless, here are some of the oils that you can select for your soap recipes:

Almond Oil – It is light and moisturizing. It also produces a low and stable lather.

Apricot Kernel Oil – It is light and quite similar to almond oil in terms of fatty acid makeup.

Avocado Oil – It is green, heavy, moisturizing, and rich. It is also high in unsaponifiables, oil portions that do not react with lye. It is ideal for superfatting. It is also rich in vitamins A, D, and E, which makes it ideal for the skin.

Babassu Oil – It comes from the babassu palm kernels. Its fatty acid makeup is similar to that of coconut oil and palm kernel oil. It is rich in myristic and lauric acids, which contribute to a nice lather. It is also ideal for balms and butters because it melts at body temperature.

Canola Oil – It makes a good substitute for olive oil. It gives a low and creamy lather. It is also very moisturizing.

Castor Oil – It is a thick and clear oil that increases soap lather. It is also a humectant oil, which is why it attracts moisture to your skin.

Coconut Oil – It is easy to scoop and provides a bubbly lather. However, its super cleansing nature may strip oils from your skin.

Corn Oil – It is moisturizing and provides a stable lather. However, it may cause skin irritation if you are allergic to corn.

Cottonseed Oil – It is moisturizing and provides a nice and creamy lather.

Emu Oil – It is a form of luxury oil and is usually used in lotions, balms, and cosmetics. It has healing properties.

Grape Seed Oil – It is light and moisturizing. However, it does not have a long shelf life; so you need to have a low superfat percentage or combine it with rosemary oleoresin extract.

Hazelnut Oil – It is very moisturizing, which makes it ideal for creams and lotions. However, it has a short shelf life, which is why you should not use more than five to ten percent in your soap recipe.

Jojoba Oil – It is a liquid wax that is similar to sebum. It provides a nice and stable lather. It is also very moisturizing and has a long shelf life.

Kukui Nut Oil – It is a rich liquid nut oil that provides a stable and creamy lather. It is moisturizing, absorbs quickly, and conditions the skin nicely. It is also beneficial for acne, psoriasis, and eczema.

Lard – It provides a stable and creamy lather. It is also moisturizing. However, you should only use fresh lard that is high in quality. If you use spoiled or low quality lard, your soap will be greasy.

Macadamia Nut Oil – It is light and has a nutty aroma.
